Strengthening Digital Resilience: Reflections from Equity Net Ghana’s Cybersecurity Workshop

As digital spaces become central to communication, work, and advocacy, cybersecurity is increasingly tied to personal safety, especially for marginalized communities in Ghana. Equity Net Ghana recently organized a cybersecurity workshop to equip participants with practical tools to better protect themselves online. The session focused on real-life digital risks, including hacking, phishing, blackmail, and mobile money fraud, all of which continue to affect vulnerable groups disproportionately.

One of the strongest takeaways from participants was the importance of creating and maintaining strong passwords. Many committed to changing their passwords regularly, enabling Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), strengthening privacy settings, and being more cautious about suspicious links. Discussions on online blackmail were particularly impactful, with participants learning not to give in to extortion demands and instead collect evidence immediately and seek support.

The workshop also highlighted a growing need for deeper digital protection knowledge. Participants expressed interest in learning how to report hacked accounts, respond to non-consensual image sharing, address Mobile Money fraud, and access platforms that support content takedowns. Requests for shared resources and more advanced trainings reflect the urgent demand for continued digital safety education.

At Equity Net Ghana, digital empowerment is about more than access, it is about protection, confidence, and dignity. The call from participants was clear: more training, more tools, and more safe spaces to learn. As Ghana’s digital landscape evolves, building resilient and informed communities’ remains essential to ensuring that no one is left vulnerable online.
