Sankofa Flames 2026: A Month of Memory, Healing, Joy, and Collective Action
Sankofa Flames, an initiative by Equity Net Ghana in commemoration of Pride Month, is a celebration of memory, resilience, and community. Inspired by the Akan adinkra symbol of Sankofa—the wisdom that teaches us to return to the past to reclaim what is valuable—we recognize that our histories are essential to shaping a more just and hopeful future. Across 4 weeks, we held 12 events, both online and in-person, and had over 15 speakers, where participants engaged in conversations, wellness sessions, community-building activities, and celebrations.
Week One: Launching Sankofa Flames
The month began with the official launch of Sankofa Flames, introducing the Pride theme and offering a preview of the community anthology. The opening week invited participants to reflect on queer history, resilience, and collective memory through a virtual launch, online discussions, and an in-person potluck gathering.
The discussions explored what Sankofa means within the context of queer survival in Ghana—how remembering our stories, preserving our histories, and learning from those who came before us can strengthen our present and inspire our future.
Week Two: Prioritising Mental Health and Wellness
Recognising the emotional realities faced by gender and sexual minorities, the second week centred on healing, self-care, and emotional resilience. Through anxiety coping sessions, peer support circles, and facilitated conversations about self-care and love languages, participants shared experiences in safe, affirming spaces.
The programme encouraged practical approaches to mental wellness while reminding participants that community care is an essential part of collective liberation.
