Why Voices Matter

Laws don't change in a vacuum. Public opinion doesn't shift through silence. Every major human rights movement in history has been powered by one thing: the courage of real people telling their real stories.

In Ghana, marginalized individuals are rendered invisible erased from public discourse, excluded from media representation, and reduced to stereotypes in political debate. The result is a society that legislates against people it has never truly heard from. That dehumanizes communities it has never sat with.

Voices of Equality exists to change that narrative, not through confrontation, but through truth. Through art, storytelling, community conversations, and documentation that puts a human face on what society has been trained to reject.

What This Campaign Funds

Voices of Equality operates at the intersection of storytelling, community building, and strategic advocacy:

• Documenting lived experiences through interviews, essays, and oral histories
• Publishing the ENG annual publication, art, poetry, and personal narratives by queer Ghanaians
• Community dialogues, facilitated conversations that bridge understanding across generations
• Regional convenings where marginalized people connect, share, and organize
• Research and surveys that capture community needs and inform advocacy strategy
• Media engagement, thus equipping community members to safely share their stories publicly
• Language preservation, documenting and uplifting minority group language and culture

The Impact of Visibility

Our first publication reached hundreds of readers, allies, policymakers, journalists, and community members who had never engaged with queer Ghanaian voices before. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Minds shifted. Conversations opened. Connections formed.

But one publication is not enough. Sustained visibility requires sustained effort, more stories collected, more dialogues held, more research conducted, more platforms built. Every edition, every convening, every documented story adds a brick to the foundation of a more equitable Ghana.

Building Toward Change

We are raising $12,000 to publish the next edition of our voices publication, host community dialogues in 5 regions, conduct a national survey on the experiences of LGBTQ+ Ghanaians, and produce a documentary series amplifying the stories of those who choose to be heard. This is long-term culture change, and it starts with a single voice choosing to speak.
